ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team lost 1-0 to Rockhurst in its opening game of the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament on Wednesday afternoon at the EastSide Centre in East Peoria, Ill. The Tritons are 26-25 while the Hawks move to 31-18.
Rockhurst's sole run came in the top of the fifth. A leadoff walk put the runner on first, moving to second with a sacrifice bunt. A bunt on the next at back advanced the runner to third before a throwing error sent Kaylee Pugh home from third.
The Tritons had four hits in the contest, advancing a runner to third base only once. In the bottom of the fifth,
Gracie Philpot doubled to right center, moving to third on a ground out by
Jamie Widule. That was as close as UMSL came all game.
The Tritons had the tying and winning runs on base in the seventh but couldn't get the key hit as a strikeout ended the contest.
Widule, Philpot,
Phoebe Miller and
Kaytie Kossina had a hit apiece in the contest.
Kenzie Stoltz pitched all seven innings, giving up one run on five hits and striking out five. She is now 6-6 on the season.
UMSL will play an elimination game against Drury at 10:00 am Thursday (May 7) at the EastSide Center in East Peoria, Ill.
