Men’s Basketball Wins Two Major GLVC Awards, Has Two on First Team

INDIANPOLIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team earned two major Great Lakes Valley Conference postseason awards, while two Tritons were named First Team All-GLVC.

Head Coach Bob Sundvold was voted Coach of the Year, while redshirt sophomore Steve Webb was tabbed as the league's Defensive Player of the Year. Juniors Yaakema Rose Jr. and Jose Grubbs were selected to the All-GLVC First Team.

Additionally, Webb and Rose Jr. were named to the All-Defensive Team.

Sundvold was recognized by his peers with his first GLVC Coach of the Year honor after his Tritons reached a number of milestones on the season.  At 25-5, UMSL surpassed its previous record of 22 wins and enters the GLVC Championship Tournament with their first-ever No. 1 seed, following a 16-4 mark that also set the school record for league victories. His 16th-ranked Tritons eclipsed the 20-win mark for just the fifth time in program history and recorded back-to-back 20-wins seasons for the first time ever.  In his seventh season at the helm, Sundvold mentored the league's top defender in Webb, and guided junior guard/forward Jose Grubbs and junior guard Yaakema Rose Jr. to first-team All-GLVC accolades.  Sundvold becomes the second UMSL coach to be voted as the league's top mentor as Steve Tappmeyer shared the honor with Bellarmine's Scott Davenport in 2011-12.

Webb was the lone unanimous selection to the league's All-Defensive Team and is the first Triton to earn GLVC Defensive Player of the Year.  Webb helped anchor an UMSL unit that ranks third in NCAA Division II in scoring defense, allowing just 62.1 points per game.  The Tritons also rank ninth in the country in turnover margin (4.9), 10th in turnovers per game (10.1), and 13th in total steals (262). Individually, Webb leads the team in rebounds (5.8 rpg) and assists (3.6 ppg), while averaging 7.1 points per game.

Rose Jr. leads the Tritons with 14.1 points and 2.0 steals per game. He is shooting 44.3 percent from the field and a team-best 76.3 percent from the free-throw line and averages 4.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game. In GLVC-only games, Rose Jr. ranked 12th in the league with 15.7 points per game and was second with 41 steals.

Grubbs adds 13.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.2 steals per game. He is shooting 48.7 percent from the field, including 42.7 percent (50-of-117) from three-point range. In GLVC-only games, Grubbs was 20th in the league with 13.5 points per game, sixth in three-point shooting percentage (44.4) and 13th in steals (24).

Redshirt junior Kenny Berry was also named UMSL's recipient of the GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award. Each of the 16 conference schools chose one student-athlete who has distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside the sports-competition setting. Berry is now eligible to become one of UMSL's two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced at the end of hte academic year.

UMSL will take their 25-5 overall record into the GLVC Tournament this weekend as the top seed where they will face No. 8 seed Drury on Thursday at 6 p.m. in one of four quarterfinal round games.
