Its back home for the UMSL men's basketball team, who is hoping the friendly confines of the Mark Twain Building can help them snap a five-game losing streak. The task won't be easy, however, as the Tritons welcome co-GLVC West Division leaders Quincy (Thursday) and Truman State (Saturday). Â
LAST TIME OUT
UMSL is coming off an 86-59 loss at GLVC East Division leader Wisconsin-Parkside last Saturday and a 76-73 loss at Lewis last Thursday. In the three-point loss to the Flyers, junior
Steven Davis knocked down three three-pointers in a span of 80 seconds to help the Tritons pull within one after UMSL was down seven with 1:31 to play. Davis averaged 11 points in the two games, while senior
Hunter Reine averaged 14 points and 5.5 rebounds, while shooting 73.7 percent from the field.
SIZING UP THE TRITONS
The Tritons are 8-9 overall, including 2-5 in the GLVC, where they sit in fifth place in the West Division standings... UMSL is 4-4 at home, including 0-2 in the GLVC... the Tritons rank last in the GLVC in scoring offense (68.9 ppg), but are third in scoring defense (70.6 ppg)... 10 different players have started at least one game, while eight different players have been the top scorer.
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
Senior
Hunter Reine and junior
Steven Davis are the only two players averaging double figures.
Reine has upped his average to 11.1 points per game to go with a team-best 8.1 rebounds and is shooting 61.2 percent from the field. He ranks fifth in the GLVC in rebounding and sixth in shooting percentage. Reine, who also has five double-doubles, has upped his scoring and rebounding production numbers from last season when he averaged 7.9 points and 4.8 rebounds.
Davis averages 10.8 points per game with 80 percent of his scoring coming from beyond the three-point line on a team-best 49 three-pointers. He has made at least one three-pointer in all but one game and has seven games of four or more long balls.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Quincy is 15-3 overall, including 5-2 in the GLVC, with those two losses coming last weekend to then No. 9 ranked Bellarmine (103-96 OT) and then No. 10 ranked Southern Indiana (88-85). The Hawks, who sit atop the GLVC West Division standings with Truman State, have already played a pair of games in the Mark Twain Building this season, going 1-1 at the GLVC-GLIAC Challenge on opening weekend. Quincy averages 87.9 points on offense and shoots a league-best 52.9 percent from the field. The Hawks, however, rank last in the GLVC in free throw shooting percentage (66.8).
Truman State enters a Thursday contest at Maryville with a 13-4 record, including a 5-2 mark in the GLVC. The Bulldogs are coming off a 77-72 win over then No. 9 ranked Bellarmine. Truman averages 87.5 points and leads the GLVC with a three-point shooting percentage of 44.3 and an average of 11.18 long balls per game.
THE SERIES
UMSL is 24-39 all-time against Quincy and lost a 94-92 overtime decision last season on the road.
The Tritons are 25-16 all-time against Truman State, although the Bulldogs won both meetings last year, including a 67-62 verdict at home during the regular season and a 90-84 decision in opening round play of the GLVC Tournament.
