Softball Defeats McKendree, Falls to Southern Indiana on Day One of GLVC Tournament

EAST PEORIA, ILL. – The No. 2 seed and No. 6 ranked University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team opened Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament play on Friday with a 5-0 victory over No. 7 seed McKendree, but suffered its first loss in the double-elimination format with a 7-5 setback to No. 4 seed Southern Indiana in 11 innings.

The Tritons will face No. 5 seed Maryville in an elimination contest tomorrow at 11 a.m.

UMSL moves to 49-6 overall with its win over Maryville equaling a school record for victories. The loss to Southern Indiana ended a streak of 12 straight GLVC Tournament wins for the three-time defending champions.

UMSL 5, MCKENDREE 0
Senior Hannah Perryman tossed a complete-game two-hit shutout with 17 strikeouts in the win. It was her 23rd shutout of the year, which ties the sixth most in an NCAA DII single season. Perryman, who did not walk anyone, had her perfect game broken up with one out in the sixth. Both hits surrendered were singles.

Younger sister sophomore Jennah Perryman led the offense with two hits and three RBI, delivering a two-out RBI single in the third inning for a 3-0 lead before adding a two-run homer in the sixth for the final score.

UMSL's first three runs all came with two outs. Freshman Alicia Shivers gave the Tritons an early 1-0 advantage in the first inning with a two-out RBI single up the middle, while in the second inning, senior Erin Walker added a two-out RBI double to make it 2-0 on her second hit of the day.

UMSL tallied eight hits with Shivers and Walker each adding two.

SOUTHERN INDIANA 7, UMSL 5 (11 inn.)
The Tritons hit four solo home runs, but Southern Indiana had three two-run homers, including the game-winner in the top of the 11th.

The Screaming Eagles also used a two-run shot in the top of the seventh to take a 5-4 lead with two outs, following a dropped foul ball that would have ended the game. UMSL was then forced to counter in the bottom half of the frame, which they did on a sophomore Rachel Matthies sac fly to send the game to extra innings.

Matthies was one of four players to homer with her long ball coming in the fifth inning to give the Tritons a 4-3 lead. Junior Alex Stupek delivered the team's first run on her 11th home run of season and the 37th of her career in the first inning to tie the score at 1-1, while in the fourth inning junior Ryan Logan's home run tied the game at 3-3.

Stupek finished with two hits and was also walked twice. Her two hits gave her 200 for her career, which ranks fifth all-time in program history. Stupek also scored her 133rd career run in the game, third all-time in program history and five shy of the record. UMSL finished with eight hits.

Perryman was tagged with the loss, surrendering a season-high seven runs on nine hits. She also walked six and struck out 12, bringing her season strikeouts total 530, three shy of the NCAA Division II single season record.
