Men's Basketball Falls to Truman State, 90-84, in GLVC Tournament First Round

KIRKSVILLE, MO. – Truman State shot 60.4 percent en route to a 90-84 victory over the University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team on Sunday afternoon in first round action of the 2016 GLVC Tournament.

UMSL ends its season with a 12-16 record, while Truman State improves its ledger to 21-9 and advances to Friday's quarterfinals in St. Charles, Mo.

The Bulldogs, which connected at a 68 percent clip in the second half, opened the final frame with a 12-5 start, turning a 40-39 halftime deficit into a 51-45 lead. Back-to-back buckets from redshirt freshman Joshua Webster and senior Tre Ogles brought the Tritons within 51-49, while Ogles later knocked in a three-pointer at the 13:58 mark to knot the score at 54-54. However, the Bulldogs scored eight straight to ignite a 12-2 run for a 66-56 advantage with 9:30 to play.

The Tritons followed that with a 14-7 run and pulled within 73-70 at the 5:47 mark on English's drive to the basket. English scored six points during that stretch, while Cook had a pair of three-pointers, but the Tritons would get no closer.

UMSL pulled within five twice in the final minute, but Truman State sealed the game by going 6-of-8 at the free throw line during that stretch.

Ogles scored a team-best 20 points in his final game, junior Joseph English scored 17 points, 13 of which came in the second half. Junior Hunter Reine recorded his fourth double-double of the year with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore Max Cook also reached double figures with a career-best 13 points to go with three assists. Senior Brandon Marquardt netted three three-pointers, giving him 89 for his single season record. He also graduates with 143 career three-pointers, fifth most in program history, and leaves as the career leader in three-point shooting percentage (47.2).

The Tritons shot 56.1 percent, including 55 percent (11-of-20) from three-point range, while Truman State was 9-of-20 (45 percent) from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs owned a 32-25 rebounding advantage. Truman State was led by Cole Myers' 19 points.

The Tritons clung to a 40-39 halftime lead after an opening 20 minutes of play that never saw a lead larger than six. Both teams shot better than 50 percent with UMSL connecting at a 55.6 percent clip, including 6-of-11 from three-point range.
