Joshua McCoy combined for 45 points to help the University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team to a 79-70 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory at Quincy on Thursday night.
Cartharn poured in 23 points, netting 5-of-9 three-pointers, while McCoy followed with 22 points as the Tritons improve to 16-8 overall, including 0-7 in the GLVC. Quincy slips to 11-13 and 6-10 in the league with the loss.
UMSL, which owned a 42-33 halftime lead, took its largest lead of the game at 62-47 with 9:35 to play on a pair of McCoy free throws. But Quincy would hit a three-pointer on each of its next three possessions to ignite a 14-5 run, pulling within 67-61 with 4:06 to play. The UMSL lead was extended back to double digits 46 seconds later before Quincy pulled within 75-70 with 34 seconds to play, but the Hawks would get no closer.
The Tritons shot 51.1 percent from the field, including 47.8 percent (11-of-23) from three-point range, while Quincy shot 46.4 percent and owned a 31-30 rebounding edge.
UMSL jumped out to an early 14-2 lead in the game, knocking down 5-of-6 field goals, including three three-pointers by Cartharn. Quincy then scored eight straight to pull within 14-10, but back-to-back three's from junior
Michael Weber and McCoy pushed the lead back to double figures at 20-10 with 11:38 to play.
After a pair of McCoy free throws made it 28-17, the Hawks went on a 10-4 run, pulling within 31-27 with just under four minutes to play in the half.
Weber added 10 points and dished out six assists, while McCoy grabbed a team-high five rebounds to go with three steals.
UMSL will close out the home portion of its schedule on Saturday, hosting Illinois-Springfield at 3:15 pm.
