Volleyball Swept by Lewis to End Season in GLVC Tournament

ROMEOVILLE, ILL. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team saw its season come to an end on Friday night with a 25-21, 25-18, 25-20 loss at Lewis in quarterfinal round action of the 2013 Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament Championship, hosted by the Flyers.
 
The Tritons, seeded No. 4 in the West Division, end their season with a 17-15 record. Lewis, the No. 1 seed in the East Division, improves to 24-8 overall and advances to tomorrow's semifinals against Truman State.
 
Junior Allie Ewing recorded 10 kills, while hitting .350, to lead the UMSL offense, while sophomore Lindsay Meyer tallied 16 assists. Junior Emily Bragaw finished with 13 digs to lead the defense, while sophomore Jessica Ploss recorded four blocks.
 
UMSL hit .131 as a team, while Lewis hit .243 and out-blocked UMSL, 9-5.
 
Lewis used five unanswered points in the first set to pull away from the Tritons after a back-and-forth contest early on. After freshman Jory Siebenmorgen put down her third kill of the set to make it 12-12, Lewis scored five straight to take a 17-12 lead.
 
UMSL took an early 6-3 lead in the second set, but six straight Flyer points, including two on a pair of service aces, gave Lewis a 9-6 lead. The Flyers accounted for four service aces in the second set. Lewis later extended its lead to 18-12 before UMSL used a pair of blocks, both assisted by Ploss, to pull within 18-14. However, the Flyers responded with a 4-2 run to make it 22-16 en route to the win.
 
Allie Ewing put UMSL on top 8-5 early in the third set before Lewis scored three straight to tie it. After a kill by sophomore Hannah Miller knotted the score at 13-13, the Flyers scored the next four points for a 17-13 advantage. UMSL pulled within 18-17 thanks to a pair of Lewis errors and a Siebenmorgen kill, but the Flyers outscored UMSL, 7-3, to end the set and garner the match victory.
 
TRITON TIDBITS: The game marked the end of the careers for seniors Chelsea Burkle and Anna McNulty… Burkle closes her campaign eighth all-time in career kills (975) and fifth in career kill attempts (2,876), while McNulty will graduate fifth all-time in career assists (2,516) and eighth in career service aces (117)… Burkle recorded 410 kills this season, the seventh-best single season total and tallied 1,161 attack attempts, fifth on the single season charts… sophomore Jessica Ploss tallied 128 blocks on the year, the eighth best single season total, including 112 block assists, which ranks as the sixth-best single season effort… junior Emily Bragaw registered 475 digs, which ranks seventh in a single season.
