Coach Rich Meckfessel was the UMSL men’s basketball coach for 17 years from 1983 through 1999, the longest tenure of any basketball head coach in UMSL history. He recorded 214 career wins during that time, also the most of any basketball coach in UMSL history. Coach Meckfessel led the 1987-88 team to a 22-9 record and the 1990-91 team to a 22-6 record, both of which mark the school’s record for most wins in a season. The 1987-88 team qualified for the NCAA Division Tournament and advanced to the Sweet 16, and is still the last men’s basketball team to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. Coach Meckfessel was named MIAA Coach of the Year three times in his career and was named NCAA Division II South Central Regional Coach of the Year in 1984-85. In addition to being the head basketball coach, he served as UMSL’s Interim Athletic Director from 1992 through 1995.
