Kirchner is in his sixth year as an assistant with the men's and women's swimming programs and UMSL and in his 11th year overall in coaching. Before coming to UMSL he spent four years as the head coach of the St. Charles Stingrays. At St. Charles, he started with 23 swimmers and built the team up to 120 swimmers by his final year. In his final season with the Stingrays he lead them to a second place finish at the Regional Championships. He comes from a swimming background as his dad was the swimming coach at Missouri State before moving onto the University of Arkansas. Kirchner was an All-State water polo player in Texas and eventually played at Texas A&M.
