ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team wrapped up its eight-game road trip with a sweep at Maryville on Saturday at the Maryville Softball Field. The Tritons won game 4-1 and the second contest 11-2 in five innings.
Game 1 – UMSL 4 Maryville 1
UMSL (28-16, 14-6 GLVC) jumped out to an early lead with a run in the top of the first.
Maddie Snemis led off the game with a single to left, advanced to third on a double off the bat of
Courtney Settles and scored on an error by the center fielder.
The Saints (25-17, 13-7 GLVC) tied the game in their half of the first as Kylie Swinney drove in Emily Corona with a groundout to
McKenzie Lamos.
The game remained tied until the fifth.
Megan Brown led off the inning with a double to left center, advanced to third on a groundout to first and scored on
Riley Schultz's RBI single to right center.
The Tritons added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth. Lamos led off the inning with a double to left center, advanced to third on a groundout to short and scored when
Jamie Widule reached on an error by the shortstop.
Annie Scaramuzzi helped her own cause with a double to center that scored Widule all the way from first.
UMSL outhit Maryville 6-3 in the contest and was led by Snemis, Settles, Lamos, Scaramuzzi, Brown and Schultz with one hit apiece. Scaramuzzi picked up the win in the circle allowing one run on three hits while striking out 10 in the complete game effort to improve to 4-3 on the season.
Game 2 – UMSL 11 Maryville 2 five innings
After a scoreless first, the Tritons took advantage of four Saint errors in the second to take a 5-0 lead. Lamos had the big hit in the inning driving in Settles and Snemis with a double.
Maryville cut into the lead in its half of the second scoring a pair of runs on Chayse Ramey's two-run single to center that scored Corona and Mandi Lenon.
UMSL broke it open scoring four more in the third. Schultz had the lone RBI in the frame with a single to left while the other three runs came into score on a pair of errors.
The Tritons final runs of the contest came in the fifth. Settles drove in
Anna VanGundy with a single to short to make it 10-2 and later in the inning Snemis scored on an error by the shortstop on a ground ball off the bat of Lamos.
UMSL had eight hits in the second game and were led by Snemis and Settles with two hits apiece while Lamos, Scaramuzzi, Brown and Schultz had one each.
Jenna Towle picked up the win in the nightcap to improve to 11-3. She allowed two runs on three hits while striking out seven in the complete game effort.
The Tritons begin their final homestand of the season next weekend hosting sixth ranked Indianapolis next Saturday afternoon at noon at the UMSL Softball Field.
