ST. LOUIS – Jake Isaacs single off the pitcher's glove in the bottom of the seventh completed a four-run rally and gave the University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team a 9-8 win over No. 13 Quincy in game two of its doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the UMSL Baseball Field. It's the Tritons (21-20, 14-9 GLVC) first win over a ranked opponent since defeating Seton Hill (Pa.) 4-3 on March 6, 2018.
The Hawks (30-9, 18-5 GLVC) won the opening game on Saturday 6-1.
Game 2 – UMSL 9 Quincy 8
UMSL took its first lead of the series with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. With one out,
Carson Holin walked and advanced to third on
Justin Simard's double down the right field line. Holin scored the first run on a wild pitch and Simard scored on
Andrew Buescher's ground out to first.
Cody Brooks navigated through trouble in the first three innings as he left five Hawks stranded. Quincy got to him in the fourth scoring five runs, three earned, on four hits. Joe Huffman drove in the first run of the inning with a fielder's choice grounder to Simard. Brock Boynton tied the game on a single through the right side of the infield. Austin Simpson gave the Hawks the lead with slowly hit grounder to second that scored Huffman. With two out, Luke Napleton reached on a low throw that skipped past
Mitchell Green at first and allowed Boynton to score. Napleon advanced all the way to third on the error and scored on Lance Logsdon's single to left.
The Tritons got a run back in the home half of the fourth as Buescher hit a solo home run to right for his third of the season.
Quincy regained its three-run lead with an unearned run in the fifth. Huffman drove in his second run of the game with a single to left that scored Zach Parks.
UMSL cut the Hawk lead to 6-5 in the sixth.
Brandon Olion led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on
Logan Mantz's double to right.
Bryce Kulinski hit the first pitch he saw and drove it to deep center. Boynton made the catch on the warning track but fell as Olion and Mantz both scored on the sacrifice fly.
Quincy extended its lead to 8-5 on Gino D'Alessio's two-run single up the middle with the bases loaded with one out in the seventh.
Trent Anderson worked out of another bases loaded jam striking out Napleton swinging and got Logsdon to fly out to Holin in center to end the inning.
The Tritons rally in the seventh started with an error by D'Alessio on ground ball hit by Simard. Buescher struck out swinging but reached first when the ball eluded Dustin Dupont to bring the tying run to the plate. Green walked on four pitches to load the bases for Olion. Olion drove in Simard with a single to center to make it 8-6.
Mantz tied the game with a single through the right side of the infield that scored
Isaac Powers, running for Buescher, and
Braedon Stoakes, running for Green. Olion went to third when the ball got past the right fielder and Mantz went to second when Ben Dahlof's throw back in wasn't handled on the infield. After a strikeout, Isaacs hit the first pitch he back up the middle. Carter Endisch knocked it down but the ball deflected away allowing Olion to score the winning run.
UMSL finished with eight hits in the nightcap and were led by Buescher and Mantz with two apiece. Anderson pitched the final three innings in relief of Brooks allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits while striking out a pair to improve to 4-0 on the year.
Game 1 – Quincy 6 UMSL 1
The Tritons fell into an early hole in the first game giving up three unearned runs in the first inning. With two out, Simpson scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded for the first run. Dupont drove in the final two runs of the inning with a single to right.
Quincy made it 4-0 in the second on Simpson's ground out to second scoring Boynton.
The Hawks final two tallies came in the third. Boynton drove in Parks with a sacrifice fly to center and Dupont scored when D'Alessio reached on an error by Mantz at second.
UMSL couldn't get anything going against Griffin Kirn as the left-hander retired the first 15 hitters he faced and was perfect through five innings. He hit
Jared Bryant, pinch hitting for Buescher, to lead off the six ending his bid for a perfect game. Mantz reached on a fielder's choice as Bryant was retired at second. Mantz advanced all the way to third and scored on
Kameron Laskowski's single to right to break up the shutout and no-hitter.
Quincy was held to three hits in the contest while the Tritons had only one.
Adam Rose took the loss giving up four runs, one earned, on three hits but walked four in two innings pitched to drop to 4-2 on the season.
The two teams wrap up their four-game series on Sunday with a single nine-inning contest at 12 p.m. at the UMSL Baseball Field.
