EMPORIA, Kan. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team split on its final day at the Emporia State Classic at Turnbull Field in Emporia, Kan., on Monday. The Tritons (3-3) dropped their opener to Concordia-St. Paul (3-7) in the morning then bounced back to defeat Emporia State (7-5) 5-0 in the afternoon.

UMSL jumped out to a 3-0 lead four batters into the game. With one out
Annie Scaramuzzi was hit by a pitch, went to second on
Courtney Settles single to left and both runners scored on
McKenzie Lamos' three-run homer to left. The Tritons had a chance for more but left two runners stranded.
UMSL added to its lead in the second.
Corinne Daley led off the inning with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on
Irene Travis' single to center.
That would be all the run support that Scaramuzzi needed as she retired the first 10 Hornets, she faced including striking out the side in the second and third innings. McKensy Glass broke up the perfect game bid with a single to right center with one out in the fourth.
Daley hit a solo home run with one out in the sixth for insurance.
Scaramuzzi had to pitch out of a jam in the sixth as an error and a hit by pitch allowed the first two ESU hitters to reach. She set down the next three hitters to get out of the jam and then retired the Hornets in order in the seventh to complete the shutout.
The Tritons had nine hits in the contest and were led by Lamos, Daley and
Riley Schultz with two apiece. Travis, Settles and
Megan Brown had one hit each. Scaramuzzi needed only 76 pitches, 55 strikes, to pick up her first win of the season.
Game 1 – Concordia St. Paul 5 UMSL 0
UMSL had its chances early against the Golden Bears leaving six runners on base in the first three innings but were unable to get that key hit.
CSP jumped on top with a run in its half of the first. Clara Heislen led off with a walk and scored on Alexus Houston's double down the left field line. The Bears had a chance for more with runners at the corner and no outs, but Brown set down the next three hitters to hold them to one run.
CSP added a run in the third inning as Heislen led off the inning with a home run to left and three more in the fifth on Grace Beseman's three-run homer to left center.
The Tritons offense had a difficult time against Bryanna Olson as she held them to just one hit and retired 12 of the final 13 hitters she faced.
Anna VanGundy had the lone hit in the contest for UMSL. Brown took the loss allowing five runs on five hits with three strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched to drop to 0-2 on the season.
Ashley Borowitz struck out in her 1.2 innings of relief work.
The Tritons return to the diamond this Friday taking on Sioux Falls at 4 p.m. in the Washburn Invite at Lake Shawnee South Park in Topeka, Kan.
