ST. LOUIS, MO. – Sophomore Megan Brussman went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBIs to help the University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team to a split against Indianapolis and a berth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament. After losing a 12-3 decision in six innings in the first game, UMSL came back for a 6-0 victory in the second game.

The Tritons now stand at 24-24 on the season, including 13-13 in the league and advance to the conference tournament for the first time since 2005.

Indianapolis moves to 34-24 and 16-10 in the GLVC.

Junior Allyson DeFosset recorded her 15th win of the season, allowing just one hit and two base runners in five innings of work. The hurler also fanned six, while recording her 200th strikeout of the season.

Freshman Karey Kruse put the Tritons up 1-0 in the first on a double down the left field line that scored junior Kelly Essner, who doubled to left center to get on base.

Brussman added to the run total, scoring on a passed ball in the third inning to put the Tritons up 2-0.

UMSL added four runs in the fourth inning. Senior Jess Keim crossed the plate on a squeeze bunt by senior Dana Essner before pinch runner Amanda Seib and Dana Essner scored on a single up the middle by Brussman. Junior Megan Riggs followed with a triple down the right field line to score Brussman.

Riggs finished 2-for-4 at the plate as UMSL tallied nine hits off the Greyhounds.

UIndy used a seven-run fourth inning in the first game to erase a 3-2 deficit en route to the victory.

Kelly Essner hit a three-run home run over the left field fence in the third inning for UMSL’s only runs of the game that put the Tritons up 3-2.

Essner, who finished with two hits, took the loss on the mound, working four and two-thirds innings. She gave up four earned runs on five hits, while freshman Amanda Seib worked a third of an inning and allowed five earned runs on six hits. Senior Dana Essner went one inning on the mound and gave up one earned run on three hits.
