Softball Picks Up Key GLVC Victories in Sweep at USI

EVANSVILLE, IND. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team picked up a pair of key Great Lakes Valley Conference victories at Southern Indiana Sunday afternoon, while moving its record to .500. The Tritons shutout the Screaming Eagles in each game, winning 7-0 and 3-0.

With the wins, UMSL improves to 20-20 overall, including 11-9 in the GLVC. The Tritons also moved into a fifth place tie in the league standings with Southern Indiana, who fell to 28-20 and 11-9 in conference play.

UMSL put five runs on the board in the second inning of the opener and added two in the seventh. Senior Casey Dierkes went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored, while sophomore Carly Maddock delivered a three-run double to left field in the third inning.

Junior Allyson DeFosset picked up the win, pitching four innings and allowing just two hits, while striking out nine. Freshman Amana Seib allowed just two hits in three innings of relief.

DeFosset and freshman Crystal Koehler then combined to give up just three hits in the second game. DeFosset got the start, while Koehler picked up the win.

After six scoreless innings, UMSL scored three times in the seventh for the victory. Senior Jessica Keim singled through the left side scoring senior Jennifer Beckmann for the first run. Junior Kelly Essner then doubled to left field, scoring Keim, while junior Megan Riggs also crossed home on the play.

Essner finished with a pair of hits to lead UMSL, who recorded seven hits as a team.

The Tritons return to action Tuesday, hosting SIU Edwardsville in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. at the UMSL Softball Field.
