Women's Soccer Defeats Northern Kentucky, 3-2, in GLVC Tourney O

WILDER, KY., October 28, 2007 – Sophomore Anne Nesbit (Belleville, Ill./Althoff Catholic) scored two goals to lead the No. 5 University of Missouri-St. Louis women’s soccer team to a 3-2 victory at No. 4 seed Northern Kentucky Sunday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament quarterfinal round action.

The win improves the Tritons’ overall record to 11-7-2 and advances them to the GLVC Tournament semifinals Friday night against the winner of today’s No. 1 seed SIU Edwardsville vs. No. 8 seed Saint Joseph’s contest.

The win also avenges an earlier 2-0 loss to the Norse this season and snaps a 15-game losing streak to NKU. Prior to today, the last time UMSL defeated Northern Kentucky was in 1997.

“This is a good win for our seniors and a good win for this program, especially since it’s been awhile since we’ve beat Northern Kentucky” said UMSL women’s soccer coach Beth Goetz, whose team also won a GLVC Tournament quarterfinal round game for the first time since 2003.

“We were consistent in moving the ball forward today and keeping the attacking pressure on. We also stayed mentally tough the entire game, even after we gave up the first goal.”

The Norse got on the board first, netting a goal just six minutes 34 seconds into the contest when Kendall Day found the back of the net from 10 yards out off Hope Zinser’s free kick.

UMSL tied the contest at 1-1 after sophomore Lynn Cerny (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) headed the ball in from eight yards out off a cross from senior Tara Reitz (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) in the 20th minute.

Nesbit then gave the Tritons a 2-1 advantage when she scored in the 34th minute on a diving header inside the 18-yard box off an assist Reitz.

NKU’s Ashley Warndorf found Cara Alldred inside the box at the 77:54 mark to knot the score at 2-2.

Nesbit then scored the game-winning goal at the 81:47 mark off a rebound goal on an assist from Reitz.

The Triton’s out shot the Norse, 21-10, including a 12-5 advantage in shots on goal. Nesbit took three shots, landing all three on goal, while Reitz and Fox each fired a team-high four shots.

Juniors Mary Behrmann (Swansea, Ill./Althoff Catholic) and Courtney Carmody (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette) split time in goal for UMSL. Both gave up one goal, while Carmody recorded two saves.
