Lady Miners Top Tritons, 79-49, in Women's Basketball

ROLLA, MO. – Sophomore Lindsey Ransome scored a career-high 14 points, including 12 in the second half, but it wasn’t enough as the University of Missouri-St. Louis women’s basketball team lost a 79-49 decision at Missouri S&T Tuesday night in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.

Ransome connected on four three-point baskets, while junior Mary Slaughter notched her second double-double this season with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

The loss drops UMSL to 7-19 overall, including 4-14 in the GLVC. The Lady Miners hit the 20-win plateau with the victory, moving to 20-5 overall, including 14-4 in the league, while winning its seventh straight over the Tritons.

Missouri S&T jumped out to a 27-5 lead midway through the first half as the Tritons struggled from the field, netting just two of its first 16 field goal attempts.

Freshman Kelcy Hulbert netted a jumper at the 15:13 mark and the Tritons would not score again until a pair of free throws by Slaughter with 7:54 remaining. Slaughter then added three straight buckets to pull the Tritons within 27-13 with just over five minutes to play.

The Lady Miners held a 4-17 halftime lead.

The Tritons shot just 28.4 percent from the field, while Missouri S&T shot 48.5 percent and outscored UMSL, 44-14, in the paint. The Lady Miners also held a 49-39 rebounding edge.

UMSL closes out the season at Southern Indiana Saturday at 1 p.m.
