ST. LOUIS, MO. – Junior Mary Slaughter recorded her first career double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds, while freshman Kelcy Hulbert added a career-high 12 points, but it wasn’t enough as the University of Missouri-St. Louis women’s basketball team lost a 71-68 decision to visiting SIU Edwardsville Thursday night in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
After the Tritons took their first lead of the game at 56-55 on a three-pointer by senior Taylor Gagliano with 8:07 to play, SIUE went on a 10-1 run to make the score 65-57 with 4:17 remaining.
A steal and lay-up by senior Courtney Watts with 59 seconds on the clock brought the Tritons to within 68-65 before the Cougars would hold on for the win.
Watts finished with eight points, bringing her career total to 996, four points shy of the 1,000 career-point mark.
UMSL falls to 6-16, including 3-11 in the GLVC with the loss, while SIUE improves to 15-7, 8-6 in league play. The Cougars were led by Amber Shelton’s game-high 20 points.
Senior Leslie Ricker also chipped in eight points and collected three rebounds to move into ninth place all-time at UMSL with 520 career rebounds.
The Tritons held a 42-33 rebounding edge, including a 13-6 advantage on the offensive end and finished the game shooting 41.3 percent from the floor. SIUE shot an even 46 percent.
Senior Amanda Miller was playing in her 100th career game and was one of three Tritons to finish with seven points.
UMSL returns to action Saturday, hosting Quincy in its final home game of the season at 5:30 p.m. The Tritons will also honor their four seniors before the game.
