ST. LOUIS, MO., March 10, 2010 – Visiting Missouri Western recorded a 13-3 victory Wednesday afternoon, spoiling the home opener for the University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team, which was also the inaugural game at the new UMSL Baseball Field.
The Griffons (7-4) plated three runs in the first two innings for an early 3-0 lead and never looked back, tacking on four in the top of the fifth and six in the top of the seventh.
The loss drops UMSL to 3-10 on the young season.
Junior Kurt Driemeyer suffered the loss on the mound, scattering eight hits and allowing seven runs, with only one of those being earned. He also struck out one and walked two.
The Tritons recorded eight hits, while Missouri Western tallied 16 hits.
Junior Kenny Bechaud put UMSL in the scoring column in the bottom of the sixth, singling through the left side to score junior Matt Horton who led off with a double.
Bechaud then added another pair of RBIs with a two-run homer in the eighth inning.
Senior Erik Walk and juniors John Tierney and Horton also tallied two hits each.
