Softball Ends Regular Season With Split at Wash U

Game 1
Game 2

ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team wrapped up the regular season with a non-conference tune-up at Washington University-St. Louis Saturday afternoon. The host Bears, ranked No. 10 in NCAA Division III, won the opener, 7-6, while the Tritons took the nightcap, 3-2.

Senior Megan Brussman scored the game-winning run in the top of the seventh as senior Meaghan Bauer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

The Tritons took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, with Bauer and junior JaCee Ellis each providing RBI’s.

The Bears knotted the score in the second inning, scoring twice on four hits off UMSL starter Crystal Koehler.

Then after four scoreless innings, Brussman reached on a fielder’s choice with two outs in the seventh, before stealing second base. Freshman Haleigh Jenkins was intentionally walked, and then junior Karey Kruse reached on an infield single to load the bases before Bauer was hit.

Jenkins finished with a team-best two hits, while Bauer had two RBIs. UMSL held an 8-7 advantage in hits.

Sophomore Stephanie Benson picked up the win in relief, working two and one-thirds scoreless innings and allowed just one hit while striking out three.

In the opener, senior Carly Maddock gave UMSL a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a two-out two-run double down the left field line.

After three unearned runs in the second inning helped Wash U to a 4-2 advantage, Ellis delivered a three-run homer to put the lead back in the Tritons’ hands at 5-4. Kruse then put UMSL up 6-4 in the fourth with an RBI double.

The host Bears would reel off three unanswered runs for the win, including the game-winner in the bottom of the sixth inning off reliever Amanda Seib.

Kruse finished with three hits in four at-bats, while Ellis was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and a run scored.

UMSL (26-18) returns to action next Friday in first round games of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament. Game time and opponent will be announced Sunday.
