Long Ball Powers Softball to Sweep of Lady Miners

ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team knocked out six home runs in two games as the Tritons swept visiting Missouri S&T Thursday night in Great Lakes Valley Conference action. UMSL recorded a 12-0 game-one win in five innings before garnering a 5-1 victory in the nightcap.

The Tritons improve to 25-17 on the season with the victories, including 15-11 in the GLVC, while Missouri S&T slips to 26-21 and 16-12 in the league. The wins also secured a berth in next weekend’s GLVC Tournament for UMSL.

Freshman Haleigh Jenkins, junior Karey Kruse and senior Meaghan Bauer delivered consecutive two-out home runs in the bottom of the third inning of game two, breaking a 1-1 tie en route to the victory.

Sophomore Brooke Meyer gave the Tritons their fourth home run of the game in the fourth inning with a solo shot for the final score.

Sophomore Stephanie Benson allowed just one run on six hits in the complete game, while striking out five.

The Tritons jumped out to an early lead in the first inning of the opener and never looked back, scoring six runs on just two hits and were aided by one Lady Miners error, four walks and a couple passed balls.

Senior Amanda Seib threw the three-hit shut-out and struck out seven without issuing a walk.

UMSL tallied 11 hits with Jenkins recording three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored. Arras added two hits – a double and a home run.

Meyer also had a homer in the first game, giving her two on the night.

UMSL returns to action Saturday, hosting Washington University-St. Louis in a 1 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
