UMSL vs. William Woods
JACKSON, TENN. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team opened the season with a 4-3 loss at Union (Tenn.) Friday afternoon, but bounced back from the defeat with a 9-0 beating of William Woods in five innings.
Union (2-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth before the Tritons exploded for three straight runs, including two in the sixth and one in the top of the seventh, to knot the score.
However, Union delivered three consecutive hits in the bottom of the seventh to record the win.
Senior Meaghan Bauer had two hits for UMSL, while senior Katie Bartlett connected on a solo home run in the seventh that tied the score, while senior Carly Maddock doubled in the sixth.
Junior Crystal Koehler took the loss in the circle, pitching two innings in relief. Sophomore Stephanie Benson earned the start, working four innings. The duo allowed 12 hits.
In the victory over William Woods (1-2), junior Carolyn Oquendo went 3-for-3 at the plate, while junior Karey Kruse batted in three runs.
Bartlett finished with two hits and two RBIs, while Maddock also tallied two hits. The Tritons put 12 hits on the board as a team.
UMSL scored four times in the first, three times in the second and twice in the third.
Freshman Leslie Davis recorded the win in her collegiate debut, surrendering six hits without allowing a run or a walk.
UMSL will be back in action tomorrow, also playing at Union and against William Woods.
