ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team earned a 3-1 victory at Maryville Saturday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
The Tritons won by set scores of 25-23, 18-25, 25-17, 25-18 recording their sixth straight GLVC win. UMSL improves to 18-9 on the season, including 8-2 in the league, while Maryville dips to 3-19 overall and 1-9 in the conference.
Sophomores Erin Higgins and Weslie Gaff led UMSL with 13 and nine kills, respectively, while sophomore Shelby Crawford followed with eight kills. Crawford hit at a .421 clip, committing no errors in 19 attempts.
After jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the opening set, the Tritons had to fend off a feisty Maryville team that knotted the score at 6-6 before taking an 11-9 lead. Back-to-back attack errors by the Saints gave UMSL a 15-13 lead it wouldn’t surrender.
Poor hitting hampered the Tritons in the second set. Four straight attack errors allowed the Saints to take an 8-4 lead. UMSL pulled within 13-12, but UMSL hit just .029 in the second set as Maryville evened the match 1-1.
The Tritons claimed an early 6-1 lead in the third set before extending it to 18-11 and eventually garnering the win.
Trailing 3-2 in the third set, Maryville reeled off four straight points for a 6-3 lead, forcing UMSL to take a timeout. The Tritons then went on a 7-3 run to claim a 10-9 lead it would not relinquish en route to the match point.
Junior Carolyn Holstein finished 17 digs, while sophomore Kelsie Rankin recorded 15 digs. Juniors Samantha Martley and Kayla KInzinger split time at the setter position, registering 28 and 14 assists, respectively.
UMSL hit .190, tallying 51 kills, while Maryville hit .123 with 46 kills. The Saints edged the Tritons with a 7-6 blocking advantage. Higgins and Gaff each recorded two blocks.
UMSL continues a seven-match roadswing next Friday, traveling to GLVC foe Southern Indiana. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
