ST. LOUIS, MO. - The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's tennis team earned an 8-1 season opening victory over cross-town rival Maryville Wednesday afternoon.
The Tritons swept doubles play before taking five of six singles matches. Junior Stephanie Thompson and sophomore Pujitha Bandi were 8-3 winners at No. 1 doubles, while junior Aya Gombo and sophomore Katie Rynkiewich were 8-1 winners at No. 2 doubles. In the No. 3 spot, sophomore Lety Garcia and Kristiana Lazarova cruised to an 8-0 victory.
Thompson then earned a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles, while Garcia was a 7-6(2), 6-0 winner at No. 2. Lazarova and junior Annie Gonzalez each won 6-0, 6-0 at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively, while junior Cassie Maerz claimed a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 6.
Also for the Tritons, junior Yuki Takashima was an 8-3 winner at No. 7 singles.
UMSL will be back in action this Friday and Saturday at the Truman State Invitational.
