Women's Tennis Wins in Quarters, Falls in Semis

SPRINGFIELD, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women’s tennis team recorded a 5-3 win over Saint Joseph’s Friday morning in quarterfinal round action of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.

Drury then handed the Tritons a 5-0 defeat in the semifinals. UMSL will play the loser of Northern Kentucky/Rockhurst in the other semifinal in tomorrow’s consolation match at 9 a.m.

The Tritons, seeded third in the West Division, move to 9-10. The victory over Saint Joe’s mark the program’s first GLVC quarterfinal round win for the Tritons.

Saint Joseph’s, seeded second in the East Division, ends it season with a 20-4 record.

UMSL jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles with junior Stephanie Thompson and sophomore Pujitha Bandi posting an 8-6 win at No. 1 and junior Aya Gombo and freshman Katie Rynkiewich recording an 8-3 win at No. 2

The Tritons then posted wins at Nos. 2, 3 and 5 singles for the match victory. Bandi record a 1-6, 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2, while Gombo was a 6-4, 7-5 winner at No. 3. Rynkiewich earned a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 6.

Drury, 18-1 and ranked 18th nationally, is seeded first in the West Division.
