Box Score

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY. - For the first time since 2006, the University of Missouri-St. Louis men’s soccer team has gained a berth to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament. The Tritons clinched their bid by upsetting No. 12 ranked Northern Kentucky, 2-1, Sunday afternoon on the Norse’s home field in conference action.

The Tritons will be the No. 8 seed in the tournament and will travel to top- seeded Drury next Sunday at a time yet to be determined to face the Panthers in one of four quarterfinal round contests. Drury, ranked seventh nationally, defeated the Tritons, 3-0, earlier this season.

Today’s win moves UMSL to 9-6-2 on the season, the most victories since the 2006 squad also finished with nine wins. UMSL also improves to 7-5-2 in the GLVC. The last time the Tritons recorded that many conference victories was 2002, when UMSL went 7-1-2.

The Tritons won despite being out-shot, 25-8. Sophomore Johnny O’Mara gave UMSL a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute with his fifth goal of the season on a pass from senior Andy Schaul. The Norse countered in the 64th minute before freshman Jordan Bruce recorded his first career collegiate goal at the 81:48 mark for the game-winner. Junior Justin Barwick got the assist.

UMSL landed three shots on goal, while the Norse put eight of their 25 shots on target. Sophomore Tim Boruff played all 90 minutes in goal for UMSL, recording five saves.
