MARYLAND HEIGHTS, MO. – Sophomore Johnny O’Mara found the back of the net on a header five minutes into the first overtime to help the University of Missouri-St. Louis men’s soccer team to a 3-2 victory over rival Maryville in Great Lakes Valley Conference action Friday afternoon at Scott Gallagher Complex.
O’Mara’s shot came after the Tritons were awarded a free kick when Maryville keeper Michael Flately came out of his box to pick up the ball. Senior Chris Clarkin was credited with the assist.
The win snapped a three-game losing skid for UMSL and improves the Tritons to 5-5-2 on the season, including 4-4-2 in the GLVC. It was the fifth overtime contest for UMSL, who now stands at 2-1-2 in extra frame games.
Maryville, in its first season in the GLVC, drops to 0-11-1 overall and 0-8-1 in the league.
The Saints put the first score on the board in the 12th minute before senior Ryan South knotted the score in the 36th minute on a header in the box off a corner kick by senior Ryan Vines.
Maryville took a short lead in the second half in the 67th minute, but less than a minute later, the Tritons were able to counter when junior Jack McKenna recorded his third goal of the season off a rebound in the box.
UMSL held out-shot their opponents, 26-12, including 12-7 in shots on goal. South and O’Mara both took a team-high six shots, with both landing four on goal.
Sophomore keeper Tim Boruff tallied four saves.
UMSL steps out of GLVC play for a non-conference game at Upper Iowa in Fayette on Monday. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
