LOUIS, MO. - University of Missouri-St. Louis Director of Athletics Lori Flanagan has announced Troy Halterman will assume head coaching duties of the Tritons’ men’s golf program. Halterman, who joined the program last season as an assistant coach, replaces Dustin Ashby, who stepped down after five seasons to devote more time to his wife and two young boys.
“We are grateful for the time and energy Dustin has devoted to the UMSL men’s golf program and wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors,” said Flanagan. “We especially appreciate his commitment to bringing quality people into the men’s golf program including his replacement, Troy Halterman.”
Halterman played collegiately at Oklahoma State from 1991-1993 and at Kansas State from 1993-1996. While playing at Oklahoma State, he had the opportunity to learn from legendary golf coach, Mike Holder, who has won 10 NCAA Championships.
At Kansas State, Halterman was a two-time First Team All-Big 8 selection and twice was named an All-American Scholar. He was also a three-time Academic All-Big 8 honoree. Halterman graduated from Kansas State in 1995 with a bachelor of science in journalism.
“Troy is a great teacher of the game and has a wonderful vision for the future of the Tritons’ men’s golf program,” said Ashby. “His competitive experience and understanding of the college player will serve this team well as they look to take the next step”.
A 1997 graduate of UMSL, Ashby coached at his alma mater since the 2004-05 season. One of the program’s top players, Ashby was an MIAA Academic All-Conference selection in 1994-95 under UMSL Sports Hall of Fame coach Jim Niederkorn.
Ashby continues to participate in competitive golf and has had quite an accomplished amateur career. Among Ashby’s accomplishments include winning the 1995 Carlyle Lake Amateur Championship, 1996 St. Louis District Golf Association Championship, runner-up in the 1998 St. Louis District Golf Association Championship, 1996 Missouri Amateur Qualifying Medalist, 1996 Public Links Alternate, Qualifier for the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship in Portland, Ore in 2000, 2004 Missouri Amateur Four Ball Championship, 2007 Missouri Amateur Qualifying Medalist and captured his second St. Louis District Golf Association Championship in 2007.
In 1998, Halterman began working as a club professional. He has spent time in Hilton Head Island, S.C. and Kansas City. In the Kansas City area he was assistant professional at Wolf Creek Golf Club and Kansas City Country Club. He spent 2007-08 as the Head Professional at Oakwood Country Club in Kansas City.
Since graduating college Halterman has played professionally on the Prairie Tour, Hooters Tour and Golden Bear Tour. He also played in the PGA Tour qualifying tournament. Since becoming a PGA professional in 2001 he has continued to compete in PGA sectional tournaments in both the Midwest and Gateway sections. He has qualified for five National PGA Assistant Professional Championships and two National PGA Club Professional Championships. During this time as a club professional, Halterman has won numerous section and national PGA events. He was awarded the 2007 Presidents Plaque by the Midwest Section PGA for his contributions to player development and growth of the game.
