February 20, 2008ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men’s golf team opens its 2008 schedule with the Doyle Wallace Classic in Arkadelphia, Ark., hosted by Henderson State, February 25-26.
This event represents a new tournament on the Tritons’ schedule this season and is the first of seven tournaments on this season’s schedule.
UMSL finished its fall season with momentum, finishing sixth among 14 of the region’s top NCAA Division II golf programs at the Tritons Invitation.
Head coach Dustin Ashby, who is in his fourth season at the helm of the program, believes the young Tritons will continue their improvement this spring.
“We were such a young and inexperienced team last fall, but still competed nicely against the top teams in our region,” he said. “This spring I expect our guys to have a better understanding of what is required to not only compete, but to win at this level.”
The Tritons will be led by junior Matt Thomas and sophomore Tim Swoboda. Freshmen Ryan Penfield, Tim Cochran and junior college transfers Matt Stiles and Denny Reagan round out the top six players for UMSL coming into the second half of their season.
