KANSAS CITY, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men’s basketball team came up short in a 68-60 loss at Rockhurst Thursday night in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
The Tritons, who trailed by 14 early in the second half, rallied to pull within five at 61-56 with 1:07 to play on a lay-up by sophomore Beaumont Beasley, but would get no closer.
UMSL falls to 10-14 on the season, including 4-10 in the GLVC, while Rockhurst improves to 15-9 overall and 10-5 in the league.
Beasley, playing in his hometown of Kansas City, Mo., finished with 20 points, marking the eighth time this season he’s hit the 20-point plateau, but the first time since January 2 at Maryville (21 points) that he has done so. He also pulled down five rebounds and dished out five assists in the effort.
A bucket by freshman Lance Cannon gave UMSL its largest lead of the game at 14-8 with just over 12 minutes to play in the opening stanza, but Rockhurst reeled off 16 straight points in a span of nearly nine minutes to take a 24-14 lead with 3:22 on the clock.
The Hawks held a 29-20 halftime lead.
UMSL finished the game shooting 40.7 percent from the field and held a 37-26 rebounding advantage, including a 19-7 edge on the offensive end, but Rockhurst shot 48.9 percent from the field, including 53.8 percent (14-of-26) from three-point range. The Tritons outscored the Hawks, 17-2, in second chance points.
Sophomore Zach Redel pulled down nine rebounds, while also grabbing three steals.
UMSL concludes a current four-game roadtrip Saturday at Drury with tip-off set for 1 p.m.
