Men's Basketball Tops Harris Stowe, 88-59, in Season Opener

ST. LOUIS, MO. – Senior guard Aaron Jackson connected on all nine field goal attempts, scoring a career and game-high 18 points, to help the University of Missouri-St. Louis men’s basketball team to a season-opening 88-59 victory over cross-town foe Harris-Stowe Thursday night at the Mark Twain Building.

Jackson bettered his previous career-high of 16 also set against Harris-Stowe on Dec. 20, 2005, while senior guard Nathan Whittaker also shared game-high honors with 18 points. The Tritons had six players reach double figure scoring in the contest.

UMSL, which improved its all-time record to 26-0 against the Hornets, shot a solid 52.3 percent in the game and forced their opponent into 20 turnovers, resulting in 29 points on the offensive end. Harris-Stowe (0-4) shot 38.9 percent in the game.

The win also marked the ninth straight non-conference home victory for UMSL dating back to the 2006-07 season.

Senior forward Alex Jackson and freshman guard Beaumont Beasley each added 11 points, while junior guard Jeremy Brown and sophomore guard Ryan Lawrence each chipped in 10 points.

UMSL scored the game’s first seven points before building a 23-2 lead with just under 12 minutes remaining. The Tritons extended that lead to a 55-18 halftime advantage.

Brown pulled down a team-high eight rebounds as both teams recorded 36 rebounds, including 15 on the offensive end. Junior forward Cody Kliethermes grabbed five boards in just 11 minutes of action.

Senior guard Jason Black dished out a career-high10 assists, which also ties the fifth best single game mark in school history, and collected a team-high three steals.

UMSL returns to action Saturday, traveling to Truman State for a 6 p.m. contest.
