SLU Tops Men's Basketball in Final Preseason Tune-up

ST. LOUIS, MO. – Playing in its third and final exhibition game of the season, the University of Missouri-St. Louis men’s basketball team lost a 48-33 decision at cross-town foe Saint Louis University Friday night at the new Chaifetz Arena.

The Billikens, playing in their season opener, scored the game’s final seven points and held UMSL scoreless in the final three minutes 15 seconds to secure the victory.

Senior Jason Black recorded a team-high eight points for the Tritons, who open their regular season next Thursday, hosting Harris-Stowe in a 7 p.m. game. Seniors Alex Jackson and Tim Green added six points each.

SLU built a 10-point lead five minutes into the second half, but a 6-0 run by UMSL closed the gap to 31-27 with 12:36 to play. However, the Tritons would get no closer.

The Tritons shot 34.1 percent from the field, while Saint Louis shot 37.8 percent and held a 39-20 rebounding advantage, including a 15-4 edge on the offensive end. Senior Aaron Jackson pulled down a team-high five rebounds.

Senior Nathan Whittaker gave UMSL a 9-4 lead four minutes into the game on a three-point shot, but Saint Louis would go on a 12-2 run over the next 7:15 to take a 16-11 lead with 9:34 to play.

The Tritons then responded with six unanswered points and went up 17-16 with just under six minutes on the clock before the Billikens closed out the half with a 9-2 run, taking a 25-19 lead into the intermission.

Junior Jermey Brown finished the game with two assists, two blocked shots and two steals for UMSL.
