Men's Basketball Hangs on For 71-67 Win Over Maryville

Box Score

ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men’s basketball team held visiting Maryville to just three points in the first 10 minutes of the second half and used a 19-3 run during that stretch to erase a two-point halftime deficit en route to a 71-67 victory Saturday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.

The win didn’t come easy though. After building a 17-point lead with 5:24 left in the game, Maryville rallied back to pull within 68-65 with 27 seconds to play. The Tritons, who were held without a field goal in the final 5:24, had to record the win at the free throw, where they went 8-of-12 during that stretch.

The win moves UMSL to 12-15 on the season, including 6-12 in the GLVC, while Maryville closes out its season at 3-24, which includes a 1-17 mark in its first season in the GLVC.

The contest also marked the final home contest for seniors Jeremy Brown, Adam Fear, Adam Kaatman and Cody Kliethermes. The four were honored prior to the start of the game.

Sophomore Zach Redel recorded his second double-double of the season with 15 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, while Brown fell just short of the double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds. Kaatman added 13 points, while sophomore Beaumont Beasley chipped in 10 points and dished out five assists.

After falling behind 29-17 with just under six minutes to play in the first half, the Tritons outscored the Saints, 19-9, to close out the stanza and cut the deficit to 38-36 at the half.

UMSL finished the game shooting 42.4 percent and held a commanding 49-34 rebounding advantage, including a 17-9 edge on the offensive end. Maryville shot 39.1 percent.

UMSL returns to action next Saturday, competing in the first round of the GLVC Tournament. The Tritons are seeded No. 3 in the West Division and will face Wisconsin-Parkside, the No. 4 seed in the North Division. That contest will be played at 1 p.m. in Owensboro, Ky., with the winner facing Kentucky Wesleyan, the No. 1 seed in the East Division, on Sunday at 2 p.m.
