ST. LOUIS, MO. – Junior Kelly Carter scored a game-high 21 points as the University of Missouri-St. Louis women’s basketball team closed out the regular season with an 85-77 victory over Maryville Saturday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
Carter connected on 9-of-13 shots from the field, while senior Lindsey Ransome finished with a season-high 16 points, draining a career-high five three-pointers. Senior Kristi White also reached double figures with 10 points and dished out four rebounds and picked up two steals.
The win moves UMSL to 11-16 on the season, including 7-11 in the GLVC. Maryville ends its season at 5-21, while closing out its first year in the GLVC with a 3-15 mark.
The contest also marked the final home game for seniors Montrice Coggins, Alisa Ndorongo, Lindsey Ransome, Lacey Shalenko and Kristi White. The five were honored following the contest and all earned a spot in the starting line-up.
After falling behind 12 points (31-19) with 6:40 to play in the first half, UMSL outscored Maryville, 20-9, to close out the stanza and force a 39-39 halftime score.
The Tritons used a 12-7 spurt to open the second half, taking a 51-44 lead on a three-pointer by White with 16:48 to play and never trailed in the final 20 minutes.
UMSL shot 44.6 percent from the field in the win, including 50 percent from the field in second half, and 40 percent from three-point rage. The Tritons also owned a 42-38 rebounding edge with junior Kelly Mitchell pulling down nine rebounds.
UMSL will make its first appearance in the GLVC Tournament since 2005-06 next Saturday. The Tritons are the No. 3 seed in the West Division and will play Saint Joseph’s, the No. 4 seed out of the North Division. That game will be played on the campus of the University of Indianapolis at 1 p.m. (EST), with the winner facing UIndy, the No. 1 seed out of the East Division, on Sunday at 1 p.m. (EST).
