Rally Falls Short For Women's Basketball

ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women’s basketball team rallied from 18 points down, but couldn’t come out on top in a 69-56 loss to Missouri S&T Thursday night in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.

Trailing 53-35 with just over 13 minutes to play, the Tritons began chipping away with strong defensive pressure and pulled within 58-52 on a lay-in by senior Lindsey Ransome with 2:42 to play. However, the Lady Miners responded with seven straight points to help secure the victory.

The loss drops UMSL to 10-16 on the season, including 6-11 in the GLVC, while Missouri S&T improves to 14-12 overall and 8-9 in the league. The Tritons will close out the regular season Saturday at 1 p.m. hosting Maryville.

Sophomore Hailee Deckard led UMSL with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while juniors Kelly Mitchell and Kelly Carter each tallied nine points.

Missouri S&T shot 54.5 percent from the field in the first half to take a 41-25 lead into halftime. With the scored tied at 14-14 with 11:27 to play on a lay-up by junior Kelcy Hulbert, the Lady Miners went on a 16-3 run over the next four minutes 24 seconds to take a 30-17 lead.

The Lady Miners finished the game shooting 52.9 percent, while UMSL shot 37.3 percent and held a 35-33 rebounding edge.

Despite the loss, UMSL earned its berth to the GLVC Tournament as Rockhurst lost a 74-35 decision at Drury. The Tritons, who will be seeded third in the West Division, will make their first post season league tournament appearance since 2005-06 next weekend.
