Galande Leads Women's Golf at GLVC Championships

Final Results

WATERLOO, ILL. – Freshman Shweta Galande of the University of Missouri-St. Louis women’s golf team fired a second round score of 74 to finish with a 151 en route to a third place finish at the 2010 Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament at Annbriar Golf Club in Waterloo, Ill.

Galande, who shaved three strokes off yesterday’s 77, also earned all-GLVC honors by placing in the top five and was named the league’s Freshman of the Year.

Additionally, seventh-year head coach James Earle took home the GLVC’s Coach of the Year honors for the first time in his career.

Galande finished one stroke behind co-leaders Angela Denning of Southern Indiana and Lyndsey Bevill of Northern Kentucky, who each shot a 150. Denning claimed medalist honors by winning the playoff hole.

Galande’s performance helped the Tritons to a team score of 653, good enough for fifth place. UMSL shot a 329 on its first 18 holes before scoring a 324 on its final 18. The fifth place finish for the Tritons equals the highest ever in the GLVC Tournament for the program with the 2005-06 team also finishing fifth.

Junior Clara Vila tied for 18th place, shooting a 163 (79-84), while senior Amie Koerner placed 21st with a 164 (84-80). Also for the Tritons, junior Carly Ball tied for 39th place with a 179 (93-86), while senior Leslie Fischer came in 44th place with a 181 (89-92).

Indianapolis took home the team championship with a 619 and was followed by Drury (628), Southern Indiana (641), Northern Kentucky (644), UMSL, Lewis (659), Maryville (687), Illinois-Springfield (695), Bellarmine (702), Quincy (718), Rockhurst (731) and Kentucky Wesleyan (749).

UMSL, ranked eighth in last week’s Midwest Regional rankings, will learn its NCAA Regionals fate tomorrow night. The top nine teams from each region will earn a bid.
