Lavelock, Porter Power Baseball to Sweep Over Rockhurst

O’FALLON, MO. – Senior Scott Lavelock delivered a two-run single to left field in the bottom of the 10th to help the University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team to a 6-5 victory over Rockhurst in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference action at TR Hughes Ballpark.

Lavelock’s heroics came an inning after he singled to right center in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game at 4-4 and force the extra inning of play.

Rockhurst’s Cory Coquillard singled to center field to score Jordan Myers with two outs in the top of the 10th to give the Hawks a 5-4 edge before the game-winner.

A grand slam by senior Steve Porter in the bottom of the sixth inning helped UMSL to a 7-6 win in the nightcap for the sweep.

The Tritons held a 3-0 lead through six innings in the first game, but saw Rockhurst score three times in the seventh and once in the eighth to take a 4-3 lead.

Sophomore Justin Rodgers got the start on the mound and pitched six scoreless innings before giving up the three runs in the seventh that tied the game. Senior John Kalb picked up the win, working two innings, while giving up two hits and one run.

In the second game, the Hawks held a 3-0 lead mid-way through the fourth inning until freshman Manny Flores homered to left field for the Tritons’ first run of the game. Rockhurst added three runs in the sixth to up its lead to 6-3.

Senior Eric Kuntz garnered the win in just one-third of an inning pitched, while Kalb picked up the save.

Lavelock went 6-for-10 at the plate on the day with three RBIs, while junior Andy Ford was 3-of-5 and junior Ryan Gray was 4-for-8 with two runs scored.

UMSL and Rockhurst conclude the series tomorrow with a doubleheader at Noon at TR Hughes Ballpark.
