Baseball Falls in Doubleheader to Lewis

Game 1
Game 2

ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team recorded just nine hits in two games as visiting Lewis University recorded 9-3 and 10-6 wins Wednesday afternoon.

UMSL slips to 10-34 overall, while Lewis improves to 24-22.

In the opener, the Tritons took the first lead of the game in the bottom of the first inning, plating two runs. Junior Brian McCulloch grounded out to score junior Zach Hulbert, before junior Kurt Driemeyer singled to centerfield, scoring junior Andrew Keating.

The lead wouldn’t last long, however, as Lewis scored eight unanswered runs over the next four innings to take an 8-2 advantage in the fifth inning.

Keating ended the Flyers’ scoring run by delivering a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Hulbert from third, who reached on a stand-up triple in the bottom of the fifth.

Senior Erik Walk lasted five and two-thirds of an inning, giving up nine runs on 13 hits.

The Tritons finished the game with five hits.

Lewis jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three innings in the nightcap, despite just three hits in that span. Instead, the Flyers were able to capitalize on five UMSL errors.

Back-to-back two-out two-run doubles by Keating and junior Kenny Bechaud helped trim the deficit to 9-5 in the fourth inning

Junior Zach Sturdefant took the loss, allowing one hits and five runs, four of which were earned, in two and one-thirds of an inning.

The Flyers held a 9-4 hitting advantage.

UMSL returns to action this weekend in Kansas City, Mo., with a four-game series at Rockhurst. The Tritons will play a pair of doubleheaders on both Saturday and Sunday with game times set to start at 12 p.m. each day.
