Tritons, Saints Split in Baseball

ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis and Maryville University baseball teams each won a game as the teams opened a four-game Great Lakes Valley Conference series Saturday afternoon at Weber Field.

The Tritons recorded a 6-0 victory in the nine-inning opener, while the Saints won the nightcap, 5-4, in eight innings. The series concludes tomorrow with another doubleheader slated for 12 p.m. with those games being played at the UMSL Baseball Field.

Senior Brandon Fear (2-3) pitched the complete game shutout in the victory, scattering just six hits.

UMSL recorded nine hits with senior Matt Macke and juniors Andrew Keating, Kenny Bechaud and Zach Hulbert each tallying two.

Bechaud gave the Tritons a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI single to left field, while Keating notched an RBI single in the fifth for a 2-0 advantage.

UMSL then scored twice in both the sixth and seventh innings, with senior Erik Walk delivering a two-run homer in the seventh.

In the second game, junior Kurt Driemeyer scored UMSL’s go ahead run in the top of the sixth, breaking a 3-3 tie, coming home from third as junior Brian McCulloch was picked off between first and second base.

Maryville then tied the score in the bottom of the seventh, forcing the extra frame, before a walk-off single to second base gave the Saints the win in the bottom of the eighth.

Senior Ryne Moleski (1-1) took the loss, pitching one and two-thirds of an inning in relief. He scattered five hits and allowed one run.

Senior Gurdine Acklin got the start, lasting six innings and gave up four runs on six hits. He also struck out four and walked just one.

McCulloch, senior Erik Walk and freshman Drew Standefer each had two hits. Maryville held a slim 11-10 advantage in hits.
