Baseball Falls to Armstrong Atlantic State, 5-4

SAVANNAH, GA. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team lost a 5-4 decision to Armstrong Atlantic State in its final game of the Savannah Invitational Sunday afternoon.

The host Pirates (9-3) scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning on a bases loaded two-out single to second base.

Senior reliever Kenny Ford (1-1) took the loss, pitching the final one and two-thirds innings.

The Tritons (2-5) suffered through four errors in the contest and left 10 runners stranded, while AASU held a 10-4 advantage in hits.

Trailing 4-3 heading into the top of the ninth, senior Erik Walk delivered a one-out solo home run to right center field to knot the score at 4-4.

AASU broke five innings of scoreless play with a pair of runs on two hits in the sixth inning off junior reliever Zach Sturdefant for a 2-0 lead.

UMSL then took advantage of two Pirates errors in the top of the eighth, scoring three runs on just one hit. Senior Michael Hoosen brought the first run in on a sacrifice fly to right field before junior Brian McCulloch singled down the right field line for another run. The third run came on an error by the ASSU shortstop.

The Pirates then re-took the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning, using two hits and two UMSL errors to score two runs for a 4-3 lead.

Junior Kenny Bechaud started on the mound, working five scoreless innings and allowing just two hits, while striking out five and walking three.

Walk finished with a team-best two hits.

UMSL returns to action Thursday against West Virginia Wesleyan in West Haven, Fla.
