ROLLA, MO. – Junior Liz Cook and sophomore Weslie Gaff combined for 37 kills as the University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team won its fourth straight Great Lakes Valley Conference match with a 3-2 victory at Missouri S&T Tuesday night in league play.
The Tritons won by set scores of 20-25, 25-23, 25-21, 22-25, 15-13 to improve to 17-9 on the season, including 7-2 in the GLVC. The Lady Miners fall to 9-21 and 4-6 in the league with the loss.
Cook paced the squad with 19 kills, hitting at a .367 clip, and added 12 digs and two service aces, while Gaff followed with 18 kills, hitting .467 and registered five blocks.
Junior Kayla Kinzinger also tallied a double-double for the Tritons, finishing with 57 assists and 12 digs. Sophomore Kelsie Rankin recorded a team-best 17 digs, while junior Carolyn Holstein recorded 15 digs, to set a new single season record with 504 digs this year, bettering Heather Nichols’ total of 492 during the 2007 season.
The Tritons hit at a .254 clip as a team, recording 70 kills, while Missouri S&T hit .233, tallying 59 kills. The Lady Miners held a 13.5-8 advantage in blocks. Sophomore Erin Higgins added four blocks for the Tritons.
UMSL returns to the court Saturday, traveling across town to Maryville for a 3 p.m. GLVC contest.
TRITON TIDBITS: Senior Sarah Eisnaugle moved into sixth place all-time in UMSL history with 912 career kills… junior Carolyn Holstein moved into eighth place all-time in career digs with 1,057.
